what type of roles are there as a guide program volunteer?

WHEN/WHERE: At our monthly rides. These are mostly in Santa Cruz, though we occasionally venture out on a field trip

ROLES, RESPONSIBILITIES. In addition to being a team player:

Volunteer Coordinator, Organizers:

  • Fill group ride guide roles, including lead, sweep and float

  • Ensure there are enough guides and that guides know the routes they are taking

  • Bring day-of guide needs, including check-lists, first-aid kits to ride

  • Help sign-in guides, conduct the guide meeting

  • Help guides manage risks

Guides:

  • Have thorough knowledge of local trails or have access to this knowledge on ride day

  • Be proficient at mountain biking

  • Have consistent communication with their co-guide(s) during the ride

  • Be committed to starting and finishing the scheduled ride, ensuring participants are back safely at the starting point

  • Be able to lead groups of various skill levels

  • Have the ability to build cohesion within their ride group on ride day

  • Have the ability to assess the skill level of participant riders

  • Have the patience and creativity needed to adjust the ride accordingly

  • Have knowledge of basic first aid

  • Perform a group safety check prior to EACH ride

  • Have the desire to promote a welcoming, inclusive, fun environment, e.g. by including all riders in the activity, by taking photos, videos

IS THIS RIGHT FOR ME? If you've been riding with Girls Rock for a while and have a heart for helping others have a great ride, then yes! 


Benefits

Besides the joy of helping get more women on bikes, you get the riders’ undying gratitude for your generosity! Volunteers should ask for a second raffle ticket at check-in on event day.
